1 YEAR TO TURN THEM INFO FILMS

WHAT IS CPH:LAB?

CPH:LAB is CPH:DOX's very own pioneering talent development, training and production program. Since 2009 the lab has established itself as a highly ambitious yet playful laboratory-style talent scheme for international filmmakers, focusing on:

- Exploring new, innovative creative processes in development & production.

- Supporting alternative partnerships between filmmakers across borders.

- Encouraging new financing methods and production processes focused on cross-sector partnerships and market access.

WHAT DO WE DO?

Each year we choose 20 talented filmmakers who have shown international potential and pair them in teams of two, inviting them to make films together.

The core of CPH:LAB is our intense 9-day residential workshop in Copenhagen where the ten selected teams meet, some for the very first time.

Each team develops an original idea together, carefully guided by high profile tutors and experts.

The workshop consists of a carefully tailored combination of masterclasses, hands-on workshops, case studies, film screenings and individual sessions.

By the end of the workshop each team receives a development grant to turn their ideas into films.

The workshop is followed up by online consultations with the CPH:LAB team, who assesses each project thoroughly in order to choose which teams of directors are ready to subsequently be introduced to the market by joining co-production meetings at established markets in Europe and beyond.

One year later, the films are set to premiere.

WHY DO WE DO IT?

The mission of CPH:LAB actively addresses the challenges that the audiovisual industry currently experience.

We wish to empower filmmakers to take charge of their own creative processes. We give frontrunners access to the market, encouraging an integration of new business models in the creative process, while never compromising creative autonomy and artistic playfulness.

We encourage new partnerships across borders - creative as well as financial - and challenge filmmakers to find new ways to develop and produce their films.

We insist on the value of creative freedom and playfulness by giving out a development grant based solely on the will to experiment - while never losing sight of the reality in which these films are made and distributed.

With a mission to ensure sustainable development and new ways of thinking within the existing European film industry, CPH:LAB supports frontrunners – and push traditionals –out in the entrepreneurial landscape of a new film industry.

WHO ARE THE FILMMAKERS?

The program is by invitation only. The participants are carefully selected by the CPH:LAB team in close dialogue with partnering national film institutes across Europe. Via extensive research and thorough skype sessions with possible subjects, 20 filmmakers are ultimately chosen and paired in teams of two.

The participants primarily consist of European film directors at a junior or intermediate level, who with their previous work have shown great international potential. Our directors are bold, curious and open-minded, ready to collaborate and experiment, willing to take creative chances and accept this weird challenge of ours.

WHO ARE OUR PARTNERS?

CPH:LAB is run by Festival Director Tine Fischer and Head of CPH:LAB Mille Haynes.

We collaborate closely with the programme department of CPH:DOX alongside the international financing forum CPH:FORUM, constantly finding new ways of strengthening the ties between talent and industry.

CPH:LAB is financed by CREATIVE EUROPE with the support of DANISH FILM INSTITUTE, OBEL FAMILY FOUNDATION and FILMKOPI.

The project development grants are supplied by CPH:DOX in collaboration with partnering film institutes. The grants for the 2015/2016 edition of CPH:LAB are funded by Danish Film Institute, Norwegian Film Institute, Swedish Film Institute, Polish Film Institute, Austrian Films, Flanders Audiovisual Fund, Lithuanian Film Center, Netherlands Filmfund and Croatian Audiovisual Centre.

Market access for participants and projects is secured by partnerships with Rotterdam, CineLink, HAF, Göteborg and more, as well as platforms like Kickstarter and Dazed.

We are always looking for new inspiring collaborations across borders, and more partners are attached step by step as the projects and teams develop their strategies.
